In the past three months, I’ve fundraised $5,000 to help build an orphanage and community centre in Jacmel, Haiti.

Now I’m looking to double that amount. Together with dozens of other fundraisers, we’ve raised over $167,000, but we need at least $200,000 to fund the centre. This means the deadline, originally June 20th, has been extended to the end of July.

And it gives me another crack at fundraising in a completely different manner.

On June 20th, I’m going to Jacmel myself with a team of volunteers to visit orphanages, deliver supplies, and help build the new centre. I’m going to be there for a week, capturing plenty of photos and videos of Jacmel while I’m at it. I’ll put them here when I return.

Which brings me to collaborative fiction. I believe strongly that two minds coming together can create something more beautiful than one could. What would happen if I could recruit hundreds of minds to make something stunning? Hundreds of people who don’t even write fiction themselves?

I was inspired by the Kickstarter model of fundraising. (But I’m in Canada, so I can’t start a project, sadly.) If you donate a certain amount to Haiti to fund this story that once was mine and now is ours, you get a say in how I shape it.
